Communication

EMT’s receive direction from the Control Centre in responding to emergency and nonemergency calls.  The position communicates with the Control Centre to provide accurate situation reports and information following their response and intervention. The position seeks the input of other colleagues, including EMT’s Paramedics and Intensive Care Paramedics.

EMT’s exchange information and communicate empathetically with patients, carers and relatives, other emergency and community services, clients and customers, focusing on obtaining medical and health information and providing treatment while taking into account any social, cultural, religious, emotional and communication issues.  The EMT provides updates to hospital staff, primary care practitioners supplying accurate patient information. This position deals with health professionals, community services, ambulance officers police and other emergency services staff to exchange information, ensuring all patient issues are addressed to facilitate the provision of best possible patient care.

Responsibilities

Emergency Medical Technicians (EMT) respond to supported non-emergency transports and to emergency calls to provide efficient and immediate care to the critically ill and injured, and to transport the patient to a primary healthcare or medical facility or hands the patient over to a state based ambulance service.

After receiving the call from the dispatcher, the EMT may drive the ambulance to work address or location given, using the most expeditious route, depending on traffic and weather conditions. The EMT must observe traffic ordinances and regulations concerning vehicle operation.

Qualifications / Requirements

  • EMT’s must hold as a minimum the Certificate IV Healthcare (Ambulance) or its equivalent
  • A current unrestricted drivers licence (a general car licence is sufficient)
  • As EMT’s are required to undertake a variety of physical tasks, in some cases over a prolonged period, a suitable level of general health and fitness is required
  • EMT’s are required to confirm their suitability to work with vulnerable groups such as children and the elderly via a criminal history check

Experience

Previous experience in a similar role/industry, nursing or first aid response with a like organization

Purpose of the role

The Patient Transport Officer is an operational role within AMR reporting to the Operations Manager or to another senior operational position from time to time.

The purpose of the Patient Transport Officer is to provide a high standard of non-urgent patient transport services to the community of NSW and South Australia. This can include providing pre-booked, non-urgent services including home-to-hospital and inter-facility transfers.

This will involve liaison with other Ambulance and health-care employees, patients and the general public to undertake timely and efficient transportation services.

Key responsibilities

The following key responsibilities apply to Qualified Patient Transport Officers:

  • Provide basic care (including the use of some specialised ambulance equipment and basic clinical procedures) and specialised transport for non-emergency patients.
  • Communicate effectively and appropriately with patients, relatives, health professionals, and members of the public and other emergency service providers to ensure the best possible outcome for the patient is achieved.
  • Maintain all equipment and vehicles in a state of operational readiness and ensure the security, safety and maintenance of allocated equipment and goods in accordance with AMR standards.
  • Maintain comprehensive and accurate records to ensure that patient transport records are available for future reference.
  • Work in collaboration with the broader AMR departments (training and education, events, work injury response teams) and contribute to AMR performance targets and service delivery standards.
  • Comply with the provisions of the Ambulance and Patient Transport Industry Award 2010, or other industrial instruments and agreements and all AMR policies and procedures as determined by the Directors and Management of AMR.
  • Provide mentoring and guidance to “Student” or neophyte Patient Transport Officers to facilitate the development of their skills.

Essential Requirements

  • Ability to undertake and successfully complete all requisite studies to qualify as a Patient Transport Officer, as determined by AMR.
  • Demonstrated commitment to maintaining medical, physical and psychological wellbeing in order to safely undertake all the duties of a Patient Transport Officer.

Patient Transport Officers

In addition to the mandatory requirements listed above, Patient Transport Officers must also possess as a minimum of a Certificate III in Non-Emergency Client Transport; or equivalent qualifications, as deemed appropriate by the Directors or the Training and Education Manager.

Absolute Medical Response Overview

Purpose of the role

The position of Registered Nurse (Patient Transport) provides a professional standard of nursing care to all patients in accordance with the policies, procedures and clinical practice guidelines of AMR and the NSW Health Department.  The main purpose of this position is to provide a nurse escort service to patients being transported in a AMR Ambulance vehicle.

The role will be responsible and accountable for the provision of safe and effective clinical patient care, or supervision of that care, from point of collection to point of delivery. This will include assessment of suitability to travel by Paramedical Service Patient Transport Vehicles, administration of oral/IV medications, multi-parameter monitoring including cardiac, documentation, receiving and providing handover of clinical information.

The role also entails working as an effective team member of the Patient Transport Services (PTS) including assistance to the Patient Transport Officer / Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) to ensure safe movement and timely transport of patients.  The role can also involve the provision of driving relief to the PTO, as required from time to time.

The Registered Nurse is required to promote and maintain a positive image of AMR and to practice within professional and legal boundaries.  The Registered Nurse (Patient Transport) will be accountable to the Operations Manager for the provision of quality care using best practice principles within a cost effective and efficient environment.

 

The Registered Nurse will work as part of a team responsible for the nursing care, transport and management of medical, surgical, aged care or outpatients from or to hospital. The Registered Nurse will serve as a role model for Enrolled Nurses and Nursing Students, Emergency Medical Technicians (EMT’s) and PTO’s on clinical practicums with regard to clinical competence, attitudes and enthusiasm for nursing.

This will involve liaison with other Ambulance and health-care employees, patients and the general public to undertake timely and efficient transportation services.

  • Comply with the provisions of the Ambulance and Patient Transport Industry Award 2010, or other industrial instruments and agreements and all AMR policies and procedures as determined by the Directors and Management of AMR
  • Demonstrate a commitment to continuing professional development by attending relevant educational and continuing professional development sessions to maintain up to date knowledge and practices including any mandated requirements
  • Working on a rotating roster of shift lengths varying from 4, 8, 9, 10 and 12 hours
  • Some on call may be required
  • Provide mentoring and guidance to neophyte Registered Nurses (Patient Transport) to facilitate the development of their skills.
  • Actively contribute to the efficiency of the AMR Patient Transport Service through regular attendance at meetings and participation in activities that foster team unity
  • Communicate, consult, negotiate and collaborate effectively to achieve desired outcomes
  • Ensure that all interactions with AMR stakeholders, including patients, their relatives and members of the public, other and other EMS and PTS agencies are of the highest professional standard to promote the reputation of the AMR
  • Undertake other duties as required

 

Essential Requirements

The Registered Nurses (Patient Transport) must:

  • Evidence of a current Class C drivers licence and willingness to provide relief driving as appropriate and necessary
  • Demonstrated ability to assess, plan, deliver and evaluate holistic patient care together with proven ability to work with minimal supervision, independently and as an effective team member
  • Demonstrated evidence of commitment to career advancement through ongoing education and the capacity to stay informed of current trends in health service delivery
  • Ability and willingness to travel, this may involve driving long distances both within and outside the Health Service, availability to travel within the rear of the patient transport vehicle and to be physically capable of assisting with patient movement and a willingness to work flexible hours
  • Demonstrated knowledge of the NSW Nurses Registration Board Code of Professional Conduct
  • Effective communication, interpersonal and negotiation skills combined with the ability to organize, prioritise and meet timeframes and
  • Advanced Life Support Accreditation, Critical Care or equivalent is desirable

 

Mandatory / Special conditions / other requirements

The following mandatory requirements, special conditions and/or other requirements apply to this role:

  • Applicants must have a current Apply Cardio-Pulmonary Resuscitation or equivalent; or have obtained one prior to appointment.
  • Applicants are required to hold a NSW Driver’s Licence prior to commencing duties. Interstate and international applicants must hold an equivalent licence at the time of applying and will be expected to obtain a NSW Driver’s Licence upon appointment.
  • It is an express condition of employment for all people who are to perform roles with direct patient contact, to be, and remain, vaccinated against the following infectious diseases: Diphtheria, Tetanus, Pertussis (whooping cough); Hepatitis B; Measles, Mumps, Rubella (MMR); Varicella (Chickenpox); Influenza; and Tuberculosis during their employment, as specified within the AMR Infection Control Framework.

 

Registered Nurses (Patient Transport)

In addition to the mandatory requirements listed above, Registered Nurses (Patient Transport) must obtain, retain and maintain registration with AHPRA and must notify AMR should this registration (licensure) change (i.e. restrictions) or ceases for any reason or cause.

 

Employment screening

Pre-employment screening, including criminal history and discipline history checks, will be undertaken on persons recommended for employment.  Registered Nurses (Patient Transport) will be required to disclose any serious disciplinary action taken against them in public sector employment.  In addition, any factors, which could prevent the recommended employee complying with the requirements of the role, are to be declared.

  • AHPR Licence / registration
